The cellular phone has now become one of the common ways to conduct business transactions. Almost every office worker has a mobile phone, and some companies also have lax rules regarding the usage of these communication devices in the workplace. However, despite the freedom to use your phone even when you are working, there are still some modes of conduct that you should practise in a professional environment.
To begin with, try to be more considerate of your co-workers by not distracting them with loud or incessant ringing or message alert tones. You can either switch your phone into silent mode, or activate its vibrating feature. This will also spare you from those irritated glares of your officemates whenever your phone goes off with every text message you get. Sadly, not everyone wants to hear the latest tone you downloaded so, if you cannot shut it off, at least turn down the volume to its lowest setting.
Another pointer is to try to limit your usage by only answering emergency or important calls. Examples of this are communications from your child’s school, your tot’s afternoon ring indicating that he is already home, and others of a similar nature. Unfortunately, a call from your spinster aunt updating you on what just happened on her favourite soap drama is not included in this category. In relation to this, you should also carefully choose the spot in the workplace where you will answer your mobile. Look for a more private place where you can talk freely and where you will not be disrupting the work flow of your office mates. The toilet and conference rooms, especially during meetings, are some of the spots that are not ideal for using your mobile phone.
